  • This image was shot on January 23, 2008 at Cataract Falls in Owen County, Indiana. I was setting up for a landscape shot when I noticed the buck standing in the water. I quickly switched my gear to get the shot. Within seconds the deer jumped into the river, and frantically swam under the falls. He would get to an edge, break through the ice and get back on solid ground. He repeated this process about 5 times. It was horrible to watch and there was nothing I could do. I last saw him when he went back under the falls into an area where the water was not pouring down. After about 20 minutes of waiting for him to come out of the water, I left. I hope he made it. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I feel blessed to have witnessed.
